What is Sport Psychology?
"What percentage of a sports performance is related to the mentality of an athlete? " When we ask this question, we usually get an answer that is over 70%. Nevertheless, while most of the athletes train their bodies almost every day, we encounter a very rare number of athletes who have a planned system for mental preparation.
First, let's start with a brief definition of what sports psychology is. Sports psychology is a branch of science that works to increase the performance of athletes and coaches, and deals with the thoughts, feelings and behaviors of athletes in detail by adhering to cause-effect principles, and works to increase performance through mental training techniques. Psychological factors have an important place in the performance of athletes. Adding psychological skills in addition to the technical, tactical and physical skills inherent in sports performance will contribute greatly. If there is a training science for the technical process followed in the development of athletes; There is a science to mental toughness techniques. Psychological factors have an important place in sports performance.
Sports psychology helps an athlete or team achieve ideal performance through mental toughness techniques. Among the contents of mental endurance techniques studied in sports psychology; We can list various topics such as motivation, stress-anxiety management, concentration, correct goal setting, self-confidence.
WHO DO WE WORK WITH?
Athletes are not the only people studied in sports psychology. Along with the athletes, their families and coaches are also among the people working there. If we think of the goal to be achieved as a puzzle, each piece is a helper to reach the whole picture in the puzzle. When one of these parts is missing, the picture remains incomplete. Likewise, when working with athletes, we, as a team, must cooperate with every part that can contribute to them reaching their ideals and goals. In this process, mental endurance techniques should be applied by experts in the field of sports psychology.
WHAT DO SPORT PSYCHOLOGISTS DO? HOW DOES IT HELP THE ATHLETE?
Athletes face various situations. For example, they may become anxious or lose focus during the match. They may have difficulty communicating with teammates, controlling their anger, or even motivating themselves to exercise. Or they may feel uneasy and stuck at important moments during a match. In addition to working with these difficulties, sports psychologists generally help athletes reach their targeted potential through practices such as visualization, relaxation and positive self-talk techniques to increase performance.
SPORT PSYCHOLOGY AND ITS EFFECTS
How do you help athletes and other people who exercise?” When asked, we explain: "Just as there are coaches and instructors to prepare the body, we also train the mind." Imagine someone who focuses better, can fight harder, does not give up, does not give up in the face of difficulties, is self-confident and truly loves sports...
WHAT CAN STOP A PERSON LIKE THIS?
As expected, sports psychology sessions do not only consist of listening to athletes' problems and providing them with therapy. Beyond therapy, athletes or individuals involved in exercise learn various techniques and strategies in the sessions and achieve their goals more easily. In fact, if you look at it, even those who say that no one needs sports psychology want to learn techniques that can help their mind train. In other words, he wants to learn sports psychology without realizing it. Therefore, with this new perspective, seeing our mind as a muscle group that needs to be trained highlights how necessary sports psychology is.
WE ARE THE ROAD COMPANIONS OF ATHLETES
“Even if the body is a Ferrari, the mind is the key. The athlete needs to hold that key in his hand. And our main goal is to do this with scientific techniques and to enable them to become sports psychologists themselves after a while. While some experts who do not know the sport or the athlete give advice such as 'quit sports' to athletes who are having difficulty, we help athletes analyze all their environmental and internal factors rather than guiding or giving advice. We aim to help them make the right choices for a successful, healthy and happy life. We become their companions, not those who guide them.
We manage a large team working with us as Mentalift experts in our office in Cihangir, which we opened as a result of the increasing demand in the field of Sports Psychology. Our biggest principle is to provide multi-disciplinary service when working with individual athletes, teams, groups and even parents. We aim to maximize the conditions in all areas that can affect the athlete psychologically, from performance enhancement to measurement of brain waves, from coach-athlete communication to family therapy, so that they can perform at the highest level of their potential, have sportsmanship values and most importantly be "happy!" athletes can be trained.
In line with the above objectives, we also conduct group studies involving families and coaches, as well as individual session-based studies. We work by considering the 3 basic pillars of sports psychology (coach, parent and athlete himself). All three legs need to work in the best possible way so that we can get the maximum efficiency in the shortest time. Our sessions last between 45 minutes and 1 hour. “We work in every field that focuses on performance, from fencing to judo, from swimming to football and even dance.”
WE SPEAK WITH THE FIELD DIALECT
“When an athlete comes across us, he can be shy. “Am I problematic?” It happens that it comes with logic. Sometimes they think that we will sit down, delve into his childhood and do therapy for him. But when necessary, we even talk to the athlete in the field's voice. Because we, as two athletes, sit opposite each other and talk about training and performance. We're talking about boyfriend and girlfriend problems. We are developing tactics on how to gain control over all of them. While we work on increasing the performance and mental strength of young athletes, especially professional athletes, we also work on sports achievements. What are these; respect, time management, ambition, motivation. “We even work with children to reflect these in other areas of life.”
THE NEXT DAY HE BROKE A RECORD
Everything that can be to our disadvantage can be used to our advantage!
“How an athlete is motivated should be known very well. Nervousness and anger are reflected to us as a bad emotion. But when that anger is managed correctly, it is an incredibly big gain in improving performance. Factors like these need to be identified and explained to the athlete "how they can be used in the competition."
The brain is actually very interesting and miraculously effective. One of the things we cannot forget was the swimmer who achieved a record in mental training and became a record-breaking swimmer by swimming the next day. It is probably not a coincidence that when we measure the athlete's competition time in this subconscious study, the result is exactly the same as the next day's result..
